Susanna’s interest in painting came later in life even though her life has always been about “the arts” and artists. Her mother, a long time Director of an art center in the eastern US, brought this emersion of the arts into their everyday life.
Waddell has always been active in the performing arts and completed a degree in Theater Arts in college. From there, her direction changed to science leading to several decades of focus in education; however, “the arts” were always calling and engaging her through her own work and that of friends.
Twenty plus years ago, she embarked in a new expression of art via baking. Her Bakery, Notre Pomme, became a dream realized, and later the inspiration for a series of oil paintings entitled “Notre Pomme Memoirs”.
She describes Barbara Bailey-Porter as her teacher/mentor. “Taking classes from Barbara has given me direction, fed my love of painting and changed my life”.
She says, “The process is the driving force for painting, plein air is a preferred way of capturing the beauty in nature while experiencing it via all senses.” Her works are described as somewhat seasonal; she is drawn more to still life and works from photo references in the winter while in the spring, summer and fall, her interest is in painting en plein air.
Oil is her medium, vibrant colors her passion, beauty and whimsy her sensibility.
