I have always drawn and painted, and I remain enthralled by the act of painting itself, moving sensuous color around, creating space, form and visual excitement. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin and have practiced and exhibited my work in both the United States and Mexico. Along the way I also received a Ph.D. from Cornell University in Human Services, leading to very satisfying work with children and families.
I have lived in an indigenous village on the Pacific coast of Mexico for much of the past 22 years. This has been wonderful for my art, inspiring a rich color palette and culturally interesting imagery, especially that of indigenous peoples. I work figuratively and mostly in oils. Recent paintings include those of Mayan Indians at outdoor markets in Guatemala. I was attracted to these scenes because of the rich tapestry of color and pattern. I have been concentrating on patterns of light and color: the vivid shades and complex patterns in the Mayan weavings and embroidery, coupled with the light and shadows of the passing afternoons, provided fruitful inspiration.
